Flying a helicopter is one of the most challenging forms of airmanship, balancing both direction and altitude with engine power and pitch, using the aircraft controls. You now have the opportunity to learn the skills to fly a helicopter with this ultimate trial flying lesson in a Robinson R44!

This Introductory session will give you a taster into the training required to fly a helicopter.

This experience takes place at Cumbernauld Airport. To begin, you’ll be greeted by your pilot instructor who will take you brief through the controls, learning the aerodynamic and power characteristics of a helicopter, including how to use the cyclic, the collective, the pedals and the throttle.

Once you’re briefed for your flight, you’ll venture out to the apron to the R44 Robinson helicopter you’ll be flying. Once you’ve done a pre-flight inspection you’ll get on-board, start the aircraft and get ready for your flight. After taking off and when safe, the training pilot will hand over controls to you. Learn how to hover, manoeuvre, accelerate and climb as your flight continues.

You’ll be in the helicopter for an extended duration of 30 minutes, allowing you to get a real appreciation of being a helicopter pilot. With this lesson, you’ll also have the option to invite two friends or family members to be passengers on your flight!

Afterwards, your pilot instructor will provide you with a 30 minute de-brief and questions session alongside a personal log book, giving you the opportunity to gain real insight into your aviation skills and practice.

If you decide that you want to take up a career as a helicopter pilot, this flight will contribute towards your training time.
